Most of these vintage recipes are dinners made with jello. And no, not jello as the dessert portion of the meal. What do you think of these vintage dishes?
Tuna Fish Mold
Yup, this has jello. The first ingredient is actually two envelopes of unflavored gelatin. You need cold water as well as tomato soup, cream cheese, A1 Sauce, mayonnaise, celery, onion, and some seasonings. Oh, and tuna fish, two cans of it, drained. First, dissolve the gelatin in the cold water and add to a saucepan to heat. Add your cream cheese and stir until smooth. From there add the mayonnaise, gelatin, and A1 Sauce. Cool the mixture. Mix in the celery, onion, salt, pepper, spices and tuna. Mix well and put into a mold, preferably in the shape of a fish. Refrigerate until firm and serve with a “dressing” of A1 and mayonnaise.
Did you know that Kraft came out with a potato fudge? The fudge nuggets just needed to be heated up over low heat. Pour over top of your boiled, diced potatoes. Mix well to coat the potatoes well, sprinkle with cocoa and serve hot. What happened to the milk, butter, salt and pepper back in this time? Potatoes are amazing, made all sorts of ways, but topping them with fudge? That’s a no from me.
This isn’t a half bad, considering some of these vintage recipes. After all, what goes better with meatloaf than mashed potatoes? For this recipe, prepare your favorite meatloaf and get it into the oven. Cook to temp and in the meantime, prepare your “potato” frosting by making a batch of the instant potatoes. “Frost” your meatloaf with the “potato frosting” and stick it back in the oven for about 15 minutes. Pull it out one last time, place cheese slices on top and return the dish to the oven so that the cheese can melt. Use a knife or fork to create an igloo design into the potatoes for serving.
Frozen Cheese Salad
Aside from not understanding why exactly it is that this cheese is frozen, it sounds pretty delicious. Combine blue cheese, buttermilk, chives, lemon peel, barbeque spice, and Worcestershire sauce into a blender and blend until smooth. Freeze for at least 3 hours post mixing and then remove to thaw for 15 minutes before serving. Garnish with green pepper strips and broccoli. Lime Cheese Salad
Nope, that’s not a typo. But it is a vintage recipe and here’s what’s in it. To start, dissolve one package lime jello into hot water. Once dissolved, add cold water, vinegar and grated onion. Pour half of the mixture into a mold and refrigerate until firm. Chill the remaining jello until slightly thickened. Add cottage cheese and mayonnaise together and blend. Pour the mixture onto the firm jello and unmold. Add salad greens to garnish and fill the center with seafood salad. Anyone up for trying this one? Eek.
Jellied Tomato Refresher
From the recipe, it sounds like this is basically a bloody mary without the liquor (so add some if you want!) For these, combine water and gelatin. Next mix the tomato juice, pepper flakes, sweetener, lemon juice, broth mix, Worcestershire sauce, garlic salt and cloves in a saucepan. Bring it all to a boil and then remove it from heat. Stir in your gelatin mixture, pour into a bowl and refrigerate until set. Lightly beat with a fork to create jello pieces and spoon into dessert dishes. (Must be a savory dessert because other than the sweetener..) Garnish with pepper rings if you like.
