Better Breakfast Month Was Celebrated in September

  • But it should be celebrated all year long.

We all know that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, it’s been shoved down our throats our entire life. September was the month for better breakfast. You know, not the Marlboro Light and cup of coffee you are used to.

Better Breakfast month actually started during WWI when the United States government began encouraging citizens to eat a “Better Breakfast.” And the best thing about breakfast? It can be anything you want it to be.

The most popular breakfast is cereal, if you can believe it. And while common breakfast foods, such as eggs, go in and out of popularity and healthiness, the best breakfast is one that you eat, and doesn’t drag you down for the rest of the day.

Here are some delicious and easy ways to eat a better breakfast.

Eggs, Bacon, and Berries

There’s a reason why this breakfast is so common, even if it isn’t the most popular. A good amount of protein and the carbs in fruit is the perfect way to start the day. Eggs are full of protein, which helps keep you feel full, without making you feel like you too full or tired. And who doesn’t love bacon? With three grams of protein and three grams of fat, a couple slices are great next to eggs in the am. To finish off, grab a handful of berries, full of antioxidants and fiber. They are also known to prevent and reduce symptoms of many chronic diseases.

Oatmeal and Sausage

Don’t eat them together! Well, actually, you could come up with a really fantastic savory oatmeal with sausage and cheese and egg and veggies…no? Anyhow, traditional oatmeal is not only super versatile, but also very yummy, and good for you. It’s heart healthy, beneficial for your cholesterol, and fills you up with fiber, too. You can add anything you want to it including your favorite type of milk, spices like cinnamon, white or brown sugar, and all kinds of toppings. Nuts, fruits, and seeds are all great additions, too. And whether it’s sausage patties or sausage links, make sure to get some protein into your breakfast as well.

Cottage Cheese with Peaches

I’m not a huge fan of fruit in my cottage cheese, but I would have no problem eating the fruit before or after and covering the cottage cheese with black pepper. This is a brunch-y feeling type breakfast, shakes it up a little bit and is perfect to start off your day.

Bananas with Peanut Butter, Chocolate Chips, and Walnuts

Peel and slice the bananas the long way, schemer peanut butter all over them and sprinkle with the chocolate chips and walnuts. It’s almost like a twist on banana splits, and for breakfast. Sounds delicious.

Yogurt with Fruit and Nuts

Yogurt is chock full of protein and with all the different flavors and combinations, you can always have something new and different with this breakfast. Take vanilla yogurt and add raspberries, chocolate chips, and walnuts. I mean, yum, how good does that sound? Banana and mixed berry yogurt will taste delicious and fill you up with protein and healthy carbs.

Hard-Boiled Eggs and Dip with Applesauce Pouches

If you are on the go, this is perfect. Hard-boiled eggs are easy to take, and delicious dipped in many things. Try salad dressing such as French or Blue Cheese, mayonnaise, Miracle Whip or even BBQ as a dip. You can also cover them with flavor like salt or Everything but the Bagel seasoning and eat them that way. Applesauce pouches can come mixed with other fruits like strawberry and banana, taste super good and are perfect for a busy breakfast.

No matter what you choose, or when honestly, eating these meals are all great starters for breakfast. But Hell, if you want to have a slice of cold pizza or last night’s spaghetti, you can call that breakfast as well, and you will enjoy it just as much.
